INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DENS DATA
DICTIONARY
![]()
The DENS data dictionary is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet which contains a different
worksheet for each section of the ASI (e.g. General, Medical, Employment, etc.). Within each
section, the variables pertaining to that section are listed (e.g. In the Medical Section, M1, M2a
M2b, etc.), and the following is specified for each variable: its description, the data type, the
width, value labels, missing values, and any pertinent coding or other information. This data
dictionary can be used as a codebook to properly analyze the data included in the DENS data
set.
